Does Yoast mean my WordPress SEO is done?

Short answer

No. Yoast is a plugin that gives you the fields and checks for on-page SEO: title tags, meta descriptions, a sitemap, schema, and keyphrase checks. It does not pick your keywords, write your pages, earn links, fix slow hosting, or set up Google Business Profile. A green light means the page follows a checklist, not that it will rank.

Key facts

  • Yoast SEO adds a title and meta description field to every post and page, generates an XML sitemap, adds schema markup, and scores each page against a focus keyphrase and a readability checklist.
  • The Yoast traffic light only measures whether the page follows its own rules, such as using the keyphrase in the title and first paragraph. It cannot tell whether anyone searches that phrase or how strong the competing pages are.
  • WordPress has shipped its own basic sitemap since version 5.5. Yoast replaces it with a more detailed one, so the Yoast sitemap is the one to submit in Search Console.
  • Yoast Premium adds a redirect manager and internal linking suggestions. The free version does not manage redirects, so a changed slug on the free plugin leaves a broken link until you add a redirect another way.
  • Page speed, hosting, theme weight, mobile layout, and Core Web Vitals sit outside the plugin. A page with a green Yoast light can still load slowly and rank poorly.

What Yoast actually does

Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin. It adds a box under every post and page where you type a title tag, a meta description, and a focus keyphrase. It generates an XML sitemap, adds schema markup for your organization and pages, manages canonical tags, and shows a traffic light that turns green when the page passes its checks.

Those checks are mechanical. Is the keyphrase in the title? In the first paragraph? In a heading? In the image alt text? Is the meta description the right length? Are sentences short enough? Are there enough transition words? Meeting them makes a page tidy and readable. It does not make the page rank.

Yoast Premium adds a redirect manager, internal linking suggestions, and a few extra checks. Useful, but still the same category of tool: it helps you fill in fields correctly. The decisions about which fields to fill, and what to put on the page, are yours.

What a green light does not check

The light does not know whether anyone searches for your keyphrase. You can get a perfect score for 'artisanal boutique plumbing solutions' and never get a visitor, because nobody types that. Real demand shows up in Google Search Console's queries report and in Google's Keyword Planner, not in the plugin.

It does not know who else ranks for the phrase. A page can be green and still sit behind twenty older, better-linked pages on the same topic. Competition decides position, and Yoast has no view of it.

It does not measure whether the page answers the question. A page that mentions 'emergency dentist Calgary' in all the right places but never states your hours, your address, what an emergency visit costs, or how to reach you after 6 pm will lose to a page that does.

And it says nothing about links, reviews, your Google Business Profile, page speed, or whether your forms actually send. All of those weigh more than the position of a keyphrase in a heading.

The work that is still yours

Keyword choice. Pull the queries your site already appears for from Search Console. Add the searches you want and check their demand in Keyword Planner. One page, one search: give each service and each area its own page and its own keyphrase, instead of pointing every page at the same one.

Content. Write what a customer needs to decide: prices or price ranges, what is included, how long it takes, who does the work, what happens after they call. Add real photos with descriptive alt text.

Off-site signals. Complete your Google Business Profile, collect reviews steadily, and get listed where your competitors are listed. Ask suppliers and associations for a link.

Technical health and measurement. Yoast will not fix a slow theme, a heavy page builder, or a host that times out. Check Core Web Vitals in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights. Then set up Google Analytics 4 with events for form sends and phone clicks. A green light is not a lead; a tracked enquiry is.

When is WordPress SEO actually done?

It is not a task with an end date. Competitors publish, Google updates, and searches shift. What 'done' looks like in practice is a routine: a few new or improved pages each month, reviews arriving every week, Search Console checked for errors and new queries, and a monthly look at which pages produced enquiries.

Yoast fits into that routine as the place you type the title and description. If you would rather hand the routine to someone, SearchPod charges $50 a page for SEO, with a 10-page monthly minimum and no contract term. We work inside your WordPress site with the plugin you already have, and we report on leads, not lights.
