Implementation: Call Quality Scoring
Turn a recorded call into a lead quality score.
Not every call that comes in from an ad is a real opportunity. Some are wrong numbers, some are spam, some are a genuinely qualified buyer. This workflow scores the call and reports that score back to Google Ads as a value, not just a count of rings.

What this workflow covers
The field map, the identity match, and the decay problem.
The field map
Dynamic number insertion swaps in a unique tracking number for each visitor's session, tying a resulting call to that session's ID, duration, and source campaign. The quality score itself is added afterward, as a label like Booked, Qualified, or Spam entered against that specific call record.
The identity match
A tracking number pool assigns a number to a session for as long as that visitor stays in the pool's window, linking the call back to the original click and its click ID. A call from a number seen in an old printed ad or a directory listing, rather than the live tracked session, has no click ID to attach to.
Where the data enters
The score gets entered by a receptionist, a rep, or a scoring feature the call tracking platform may offer, directly against the call log. A workflow rule then converts that score into a numeric conversion value and pushes it to Google Ads through an offline conversion import, matched by the click ID and the call's timestamp.
How failures surface
Google Ads' offline conversion import only accepts a call within a matching window tied to the original click, so a lead who calls back well after clicking can lose that match. A call shorter than a set duration, which some platforms don't count as a qualifying interaction at all, may never get scored in the first place.
Where scoring quality quietly falls apart.
A score has to happen before it decays
A rep scoring calls once a week from a stale list produces noisy data with almost no relationship to how each call actually went. Scoring only holds up if it happens the same day, with the recording still fresh, which is a staffing and process constraint at least as much as a technical one.
The score is a judgment call, not a fact
Deciding whether a call counts as Qualified, Booked, or Spam is a call made by whoever reviews it. Two reviewers scoring the same kind of conversation differently shows up later in your Google Ads reporting as noise that looks like a campaign problem, when it is really a scoring consistency problem.
A missed call has nothing to score
A call that rings out or lands in voicemail generates no conversation to review, only a record that a call attempt happened. We count these separately from answered, scored calls, since folding them into one quality metric hides how many leads never actually got a conversation.
Not every call platform offers the same tools
Some call tracking platforms include automatic transcript scoring or keyword spotting, and some only support manual tagging by a person. We build the workflow around whichever features your specific platform actually documents, and we say plainly when a feature is not available rather than assuming it exists everywhere.
How we set it up.
01
Confirm the call tracking setup
We verify dynamic number insertion is live and correctly swapping tracking numbers for visitors arriving from your paid campaigns before scoring anything.
02
Define the scoring rule
We agree with your team on what counts as qualified, borderline, or spam, and what value gets recorded on the call once that decision is made.
03
Connect the score to Google Ads
We set up the offline conversion import, matched by click ID and call timestamp, so a scored call becomes a real conversion value tied to the click that caused it.
Call recording to lead quality scoring FAQ.
No. Recording the calls that come through your paid-campaign tracking numbers is enough for this workflow. Organic and direct-dial calls can be handled with a separate setup if you also want that data scored.
Usually your team, since they know a real buyer when they hear one. We build the workflow and the scoring rule, and some clients pair it with an automatic scoring feature their call platform offers, where that feature exists.
It has no click ID to attach to, so it can't be matched back to a specific ad click for an offline conversion import. It still shows up in your call log, just without campaign-level attribution.
No, this workflow is calls only. Scoring form leads and turning that score into a Google Ads value uses a related but separate setup, usually tied to a CRM pipeline stage change.
Yes. Flag your call tracking platform and whatever scoring process already exists, then ask for a proposal. A workable scope lands in your inbox within one business day.
Tell Google Ads which calls actually became customers.
We'll confirm your call tracking is matching clicks correctly, build the scoring rule with your team, and connect the score to a real conversion value inside Google Ads.
