Northlight

Gottingen Street · since 2016

A bright room, a kind welcome

Northlight began with a simple idea: a yoga studio where a nervous beginner and a ten-year regular both feel at home, and where nobody has to guess what a class will be like.

Why "Northlight"

Painters love north light: it is soft, even, and never glares. When Maren Holt found a second-floor room on Gottingen Street with four north-facing skylights, she knew it was the studio. She had spent five years teaching in rented church halls, carrying blocks in a laundry bag.

We opened in 2016 with one room and nine classes a week. The Ember Room, our heated room, came in 2019, after students kept asking for a warm class that did not feel like a sauna. Today 6 teachers lead 43 classes a week, and the front desk still knows most people by name.

We are not the biggest studio in Halifax, and we do not want to be. We would rather be the one where you feel welcome on your first day and still look forward to class in your fifth year.

What we care about

Three ideas that shape every class, every price and every email we send.

Two rooms

Students sit and chat on their mats in the bright Skylight Room after class

Skylight Room

30 mats · Not heated, about 20 to 22°C

Our big room under four north-facing skylights. Soft, even light all day, wood floors, and a wall of props. Every unheated class happens here.

Ember Room

22 mats · Warm 27 to 29°C, or hot 33 to 37°C

The heated room. Radiant ceiling panels warm you, not just the air, and a fresh-air system swaps the air out several times an hour, so it feels warm, not stuffy.

Both rooms are on the second floor, with an elevator from the street door, an accessible washroom, two change rooms with showers, and lockers that take your own lock or a loaner from the desk.

Our mission

To be the studio where your first class feels easy, your hundredth still feels fresh, and every class tells you the truth about what it is.
