What yin & restorative is like here
Yin and Restorative are our quiet classes. In Yin, you hold simple floor poses for 3 to 5 minutes and let time do the work. In Restorative, bolsters and blankets hold you, so you barely stretch at all. Both are good for busy minds and tired bodies.
A good fit if
- Stress, poor sleep or a mind that will not switch off
- Balancing out running, lifting or hot classes
- Anyone who wants yoga without effort or sweat
Think twice, or talk to us first, if
- Very loose or hypermobile joints: stay in the middle of your range in Yin, and use more props
- Lying still is hard for you right now: try Slow Flow first and build up
What happens in class
-
1
Collect your props
A bolster, two blankets, two blocks and a strap. Your teacher will show you how to use them.
-
2
Settle the breath
A few minutes lying down with slow breathing, often with an eye pillow if you like.
-
3
Long holds
Four to eight poses, mostly on the floor. Your teacher talks a little, then lets the room be quiet.
-
4
Come out slowly
Moving out of a long hold takes care. You will be guided out of every pose.
-
5
Long rest
A longer savasana than any other class, often with a blanket over you.
Plain notes: props, heat, injuries
-
Props
Props do most of the work in these classes. We have enough bolsters and blankets for a full room, and they are washed every week.
-
Heat
Yin and Restorative are not heated. Warm Yin runs in the Ember Room at 27 to 29°C, cozy, not sweaty.
-
Injuries and health
Long holds can press on tender spots. If a pose pinches or goes numb, come out and ask for another shape. There is always one.
General information, not medical advice. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or care provider before class.

Questions about yin & restorative
What is the difference between Yin and Restorative?
Yin asks for a mild stretch held for a few minutes. Restorative asks for almost no stretch at all; the props support you completely, and the goal is rest.
Will I fall asleep?
Some people do, and that is fine. Your teacher will quietly let you know when class is ending.
