How it works

  1. Three people fill out intake forms on clipboards in a calm waiting room

Step 1: Tell us what is going on

Our five-step intake request takes about four minutes. Maya, our care coordinator, calls you within one business day to check your insurance and offer the soonest video and in-person times.

  2. A quiet consultation room with a soft armchair, a side table with tissues and a glass of water, and a clipboard on the seat

Step 2: A first evaluation that is not rushed

Plan on 60 to 90 minutes with your clinician, in our Richmond office or by secure video. You talk, they listen, and before you leave you hear in plain words what they think is going on.

  3. A patient joins an evening video visit from a desk at home, with the clinician on the laptop screen

Step 3: A written plan, then steady follow-ups

You get a short written plan. Follow-ups run 20 to 30 minutes, closer together at first, then every one to three months. Non-urgent questions go through the patient portal between visits.

What patients say

Dr. Marsh was the first psychiatrist who asked what I had already tried and actually wrote it down. We changed one thing at a time. It took a few months, but I finally understand my own plan.

Common questions

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?

A psychiatrist (or psychiatric nurse practitioner) is a medical prescriber who diagnoses and can treat with medication. A therapist provides talk therapy. Many people see both, and we work with therapists all the time.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly. Some insurance plans ask for a referral from your primary care doctor, and we check that when we verify your benefits.

How soon can I be seen?

It changes week to week. Video intakes are often available within one to two weeks, and in-person intakes within two to four. When you call or book online, we tell you the soonest time for both.

Will I be prescribed medication at my first visit?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. It depends on what your clinician finds and what you decide together. We never promise a prescription before or during an evaluation.

Do you take insurance?

We are in network with several large commercial plans and Medicare. We check your plan before your first visit and tell you what you will likely owe. If we are out of network, we give you a superbill.

Is my information private?

Yes. Your records are protected by federal health-privacy law. We do not share anything with your employer or school without your written permission, except where the law requires it to keep someone safe.

Book an intake

Helping someone you love?

Parents can book for a child or teen. For an adult family member, we need them to know about the request and to agree to the visit. Either way, our care coordinator can talk you through what happens first.
