Your first visit, step by step

Reaching out is often the hardest part. Here is exactly what happens next, so nothing comes as a surprise.

From first click to first plan

  1. Before

    Request, call, and forms

    • Send the five-step intake request online, or call us.
    • Within one business day, Maya calls to check your insurance and offer the soonest video and in-person times.
    • You get a portal link with a few short forms: health history, current medicines, and two brief questionnaires. About 20 minutes.
    • With your permission, we request records from your last prescriber.
  2. On the day

    In person or by video

    • In person: arrive ten minutes early. Check-in is a quick tablet form, and the waiting area is quiet.
    • By video: the link arrives by text and email. Join from a private space in Virginia, five minutes early, to test sound and camera.
    • If the video drops, your clinician calls the phone number in your chart.
  3. During

    A real conversation, 60 to 90 minutes

    • Your clinician asks what brought you in, how you are sleeping, eating, and feeling, and what you have tried before.
    • They ask about health, family history, alcohol and other substances, and safety. Everyone gets these questions; they are routine, not a judgement.
    • You can skip anything you are not ready to talk about yet.
  4. After

    A plan you can read

    • Before you leave, your clinician explains what they think is going on, in plain words.
    • You get a written plan in the portal: what we are trying, what to watch for, and the next visit date.
    • If a prescription is part of the plan, it goes to the pharmacy you choose.

What to bring

  • Photo ID and insurance card
  • A list of current and past psychiatric medicines, with doses
  • Names of your therapist and family doctor, if you have them
  • Any past records or test results you already have
  • For a child: report cards or teacher notes, and the parent or guardian with legal consent
  • A few notes on what you most want help with (it is easy to forget in the moment)

Booking for a child or teen

A parent or legal guardian books, fills in the forms, and comes to the first visit. Part of the visit is together and part is separate. Teens get some private time at every visit; anything about safety is always shared with parents.

Your privacy, your choice

On the intake request you choose how we contact you, whether we may leave a voicemail, and whether a message may mention Linnet by name. We never share your records with an employer or school without your written permission, except where the law requires it to keep someone safe.

This is not emergency care

Intake requests are read during office hours. If you might hurt yourself or someone else, call or text 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Start when it feels right.

Tell us a little about what is going on and choose an intake time, in person or by video. We check your insurance and confirm everything by phone before your first visit.

Not safe right now? Call or text 988 or call 911.
