FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about starting care, medication, costs, and privacy. If your question is not here, call us and a real person will answer it.

Getting started

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly. Some insurance plans ask for a referral from your primary care doctor, and we check that when we verify your benefits.

How soon can I be seen?

It changes week to week. Video intakes are often available within one to two weeks, and in-person intakes within two to four. When you call or book online, we tell you the soonest time for both.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?

A psychiatrist (or psychiatric nurse practitioner) is a medical prescriber who diagnoses and can treat with medication. A therapist provides talk therapy. Many people see both, and we work with therapists all the time.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Your ID, insurance card, a list of current and past medicines with doses, and any past records you have. For a child, bring school reports or teacher notes too.

Medication

Will I be prescribed medication at my first visit?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. It depends on what your clinician finds and what you decide together. We never promise a prescription before or during an evaluation.

Do you prescribe controlled medicines like stimulants?

When they are a safe and appropriate fit, yes, following federal and Virginia rules. That includes checking the state prescription monitoring program, regular follow-ups, and sometimes an in-person visit.

Can I stop a medicine on my own?

Please talk with us first. Some medicines need to be lowered slowly. We are glad to plan a careful change with you.

How do refills work?

Refills are handled at your follow-up visits. Between visits, request them through the patient portal at least five business days before you run out.

Costs and insurance

Do you take insurance?

We are in network with several large commercial plans and Medicare. We check your plan before your first visit and tell you what you will likely owe. If we are out of network, we give you a superbill.

How much does a visit cost without insurance?

First evaluations start at $375 for adults, and follow-ups start at $150. The full fee table is on our Insurance and fees page, and every self-pay patient gets a written Good Faith Estimate.

Is there a cancellation fee?

Yes, with one business day's notice required. We waive the first late cancellation each year.

Privacy and safety

Is my information private?

Yes. Your records are protected by federal health-privacy law. We do not share anything with your employer or school without your written permission, except where the law requires it to keep someone safe.

Can you leave a voicemail at my number?

Only if you tell us it is okay. On your intake you can choose whether we may leave messages and whether they can mention Linnet by name.

What if I am in crisis?

Call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room. We are not an emergency service and our messages are not watched after hours.

Still have a question?
