Daily life and activities
Days with a shape, and room to say no
We ask every new resident what they loved doing at 40, at 60, and last year. Then we build their week around the answer, not around a staff schedule.
What fills the week
Six things residents keep coming back to
-
01
Move a little every day
Chair yoga, balance classes and a walking group, led by our recreation team. Short sessions, sitting or standing, no one left out.
-
02
Hands in the soil
Raised garden beds at wheelchair height. The garden club grows the herbs our chef uses, and the tomatoes everyone argues about.
-
03
Music, every week
Choir practice on Tuesdays, live musicians on Thursdays, and a piano in the lounge that residents actually play.
-
04
Out into town
Our bus goes to the library, the market, the ocean and the occasional matinee. Family can book a seat too.
-
05
Learning for its own sake
Talks from local historians, a book club with strong opinions, and a monthly travel slideshow from a resident.
-
06
Room for the quiet ones
Not everyone wants a full calendar. We ask what your parent enjoyed before, and some days the best plan is a good chair by the window.
A sample week
What was on the calendar last week
Every activity is optional. The calendar changes monthly, and residents vote on outings.
| Time | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | Chair yoga | Library bus | Balance class | Market outing | Walking group | Family brunch | Faith service |
| Afternoon | Garden club | Watercolour circle | Baking in the Orchard | Woodshop | Hair salon open | Puzzle table | Sunday roast |
| Evening | Movie matinee | Choir practice | Trivia and tea | Live music | Happy hour | Card games | Quiet afternoon |
The Orchard keeps its own calmer calendar, with smaller groups and more one-to-one time.
In The Orchard
Familiar tasks give the day a shape
For people living with dementia, a busy calendar can be more stressful than fun. In The Orchard we lean on familiar things: folding warm laundry, baking, sorting, music from their twenties, and a walk around the garden loop.
- Groups of four to six, never a crowded room
- One-to-one time every day for residents who prefer it
- Late-afternoon calm: soft light and music when the day gets hard
Family is part of daily life
Visit any time, stay for a meal, come on the bus
There are no visiting hours. Family can join meals for $14, book the private dining room for birthdays, and save a seat on outings. Grandchildren and well-behaved dogs are always a hit.
Plan a visit
Come on a Thursday and stay for the music.
Tour in person and stay for lunch as our guest, or take a 30-minute video tour from wherever you are. No pressure, no sales pitch.
Hospital discharge or a fall this week? Call us. Claire will tell you honestly what we can do and how fast.
