Questions and answers
The questions families ask us most, answered plainly. If yours is not here, call Claire. There is no such thing as a silly question about moving a parent.
Care and health
What is the difference between assisted living and independent living?
Independent living is an apartment with meals, housekeeping and activities, for people who do not need daily care. Assisted living adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing, medications and getting around, guided by a written care plan.
Who is on staff at night?
Care partners are awake and on duty all night in every area, with a licensed practical nurse on site. Our director of care is on call for any change in a resident's health.
Do you accept residents who use a wheelchair or a walker?
Yes. Every suite and common area is accessible. We will talk about transfers during the care assessment so we can plan the right help.
What happens in a medical emergency?
Staff respond to the call pendant, give first aid and call 911 when needed. We call the family contact right away and send the resident's medication list and care summary with paramedics.
Memory care
How do I know if my parent needs memory care?
Memory care is usually right when memory loss affects safety, like wandering, getting lost, or not recognising danger. Our nurse offers a free care assessment, and we will tell you honestly what fits.
Is The Orchard locked?
The entrances use a keypad so residents cannot leave alone, but inside the neighbourhood and its walled garden they move freely. Families get the code and can visit any time.
What training do Orchard staff have?
Every Orchard care partner completes dementia care training before their first shift, shadows an experienced partner for two weeks, and repeats the training each year.
Costs
How much does assisted living cost at Hazelbrook?
Assisted living ranges from $5,200 to $7,400 a month, depending on the suite and the care plan. Memory care ranges from $7,600 to $9,800. Our pricing guide shows every range and every extra.
Will the price go up if care needs change?
It can. We show you the updated care plan and the new price in writing before anything changes. Most families see their first care review at 30 days.
Is there a contract or a long-term commitment?
Residence agreements are month to month after the first 30 days, with 30 days' notice to move out.
Moving in
How long does it take to move in?
Most moves take two to four weeks from the care assessment. If a parent is being discharged from hospital, call us. We can sometimes move faster, and we will say so honestly if we cannot.
Can my parent bring their own furniture?
Please do. A familiar chair, quilt and photos help people settle. We provide a bed if you would rather not move one.
Can we try it first?
Yes. Book a respite stay of one to four weeks, or come for lunch as our guest. There is no cost for lunch on a tour.
Visiting and family
When can family visit?
Any time. After 8 p.m., ring the front desk. Family are welcome to join meals for $14, and our private dining room can be booked for birthdays.
How will we know how our parent is doing?
You get a short weekly note from the care team, a call when anything changes, and a family care meeting each season. You can also call the nurse's desk any time.
