Migration: Squarespace to Shopify
Outgrown Squarespace's store tools? Move to Shopify properly.
Squarespace stores usually move to Shopify for the app ecosystem and inventory tools, not because Squarespace was hurting their rankings. We carry over what already works and fix what does not, in one project.
- Full product and order export checked, not assumed
- Every /shop/ URL mapped before launch
- Free scope within one business day
The entity map
What moves, and what gets rebuilt.
Products, variants, and order history
Squarespace's commerce export includes products and variants, but order history and customer accounts need their own path, since Shopify does not import past orders the same way it imports a product catalogue. We confirm what your accounting needs before deciding what to bring across.
Blog and content pages
Squarespace blog posts and standalone pages move to Shopify's blog and page structure, with titles, body content, and images carried over rather than rebuilt from a template, since a page that already ranks should not lose the content that earned it.
The redirect plan
Squarespace commonly serves products under /shop/ and posts under a blog slug of your choosing. Every one of those addresses gets a 301 to its new Shopify equivalent, deployed the moment the new store goes live, not added afterward.
Tracking that must survive
Squarespace's built-in analytics do not carry over, so GA4 and any Google Ads conversion tags need a fresh install and verification on Shopify. If you run Google Shopping, the feed is rebuilt against the Shopify catalogue before the old one is switched off.
What Shopify gives you that Squarespace does not
If your reason for moving is the app ecosystem
we scope which specific apps you need, since Shopify's app store is the actual draw for most stores leaving Squarespace, and picking the wrong combination can recreate the same limits you are trying to escape.
If your Squarespace site never had many indexed pages
we check whether that was a template limitation or a content gap, since Squarespace commerce sites often rank poorly for a different reason than the platform itself: too few pages built to answer real searches.
If you run Squarespace's built-in scheduling or member areas
we flag those separately, since some Squarespace features outside the store, like appointment booking, do not have a native Shopify equivalent and need a different app or a decision to keep that piece elsewhere.
What we cannot promise
Squarespace does not export everything cleanly, particularly older order records and some custom code injections. We tell you upfront what the export will and will not carry, rather than discovering it after the store is live.
How the migration runs
01
Export and audit
We pull the full Squarespace export, crawl the live site for every indexed URL, and confirm what needs a redirect versus what needs to be rebuilt by hand.
02
Build and test on staging
The Shopify store is built with products, content, and tracking checked against the map, password protected until every page is verified.
03
Launch and monitor
The new store replaces the old one, a fresh sitemap goes into Search Console, and we track results daily through the weeks that follow, since that is when a missed piece of the export usually surfaces.
Squarespace to Shopify migration FAQ
Not automatically. Page titles and descriptions need to be exported and re-entered on the matching Shopify page, since the two platforms store this information differently. We check every important page rather than assuming a bulk import handles it correctly.
Often it is not the platform. A common cause is too few pages built for the actual searches customers type, rather than any Squarespace limitation. Moving to Shopify does not fix that on its own; the migration is a good time to also build out the missing pages.
Product and variant data moves cleanly. Past order history usually needs a separate export for your own records, since Shopify treats new orders going forward rather than importing a full sales history from another platform.
A smaller catalogue with straightforward content can move in a couple of weeks. A store with a large blog, many custom pages, or heavy code injections takes longer, mainly to verify content transferred correctly.
It depends on how many products and pages you have and how much content needs rebuilding by hand. We look at your actual store first, then reply with a firm number inside one business day, never a percentage of anything.
