Recovery: Conversion Tracking

Your conversion numbers look too good, because they are counting twice.

Double counted conversions usually come from two systems doing the same job at once: a native tag and a GTM tag, an imported GA4 goal alongside a native Ads conversion, or a call tracking number counted both by the phone system and a website event. We find the overlap.

Evidence, then action

How we find the overlap

The evidence we pull first

We list every conversion action marked primary in Google Ads, every imported GA4 event, and any call tracking or CRM integration feeding the account, then check which ones could plausibly be firing for the same real action.

The triage order

First we check for the most common overlap: a native Google Ads tag and a GTM tag both installed on the same thank you page. Next we check whether a GA4 conversion was imported into Ads alongside a native Ads tag already counting that event. Then we check call tracking against any form or chat conversion tied to the same lead.

What usually fixes it

Removing the duplicate tag, choosing one system as the source of truth for each conversion type, and marking only one version of a shared event as primary in Google Ads stops the double count without losing the underlying data.

What we cannot promise

We cannot promise your real conversion volume was as high as the doubled number suggested, since that was the whole issue. We can promise an accurate number going forward and a clear explanation of how big the overcount actually was.

The decision tree we run

If a single form submission shows as two conversions in Ads

we check for both a native Google Ads tag and a GTM tag on the same thank you page, since installing tracking through two paths at once is the single most common cause of this.

If GA4 and Ads both report the same lead as a conversion

we check whether a GA4 event was imported into Ads as its own conversion action while the native Ads tag for that same event is still marked primary.

If a phone call shows up as a conversion in more than one place

we check whether a call tracking number's own conversion and a click to call event on the site are both marked as primary for the same account.

If total conversions dropped sharply right after a fix

we check whether the fix removed the wrong tag instead of the duplicate, since it is possible to disable the one system that was actually the accurate source.

How the engagement runs

01

Full conversion action inventory

We list every conversion action across Google Ads, GA4, and any connected call tracking or CRM tool feeding the account.

02

A written map of the overlap

You get a plain explanation of which conversions are being counted more than once and by roughly how much.

03

Fix, then confirm the real number

We remove the duplicate path and confirm the corrected total against your actual leads for a recent period.
