You dropped out of the map pack, and you want to know why.
Google ranks the map pack on eligibility, relevance, distance, and prominence, in that order. A sudden drop usually traces back to one of those, and the Business Profile's own history holds the clue.

How we work the problem
The four things we check, in order.
Evidence we pull first
The Business Profile's own edit history around the drop date, the Performance report for the same window, and whether the profile is still verified and live rather than quietly suspended.
Triage order
Eligibility first, since a suspended or unverified profile cannot rank at all no matter what else is right. Category and recent edits second. Competitor movement in the same pack last, since that points to a prominence shift rather than something broken on your end.
What usually fixes it
Reverting an accidental category or name change, clearing a suspension, or restarting a steady review request flow if competitors pulled ahead on prominence while your profile sat still for a while.
What we cannot promise
Google decides the map pack ranking, and a competitor who is simply closer to a given searcher cannot be out-ranked by better content alone. There is also no way to pay for a better placement in the organic map results.
The decision tree we run through
If the profile shows a suspension or verification notice
That is the whole answer by itself, since an ineligible profile does not enter the ranking regardless of anything else. We prioritize clearing that before looking at any other signal.
If the primary category or business name changed recently
We check the edit history around the exact drop date, since a category or name change is one of the more common causes of a sudden loss for a specific search phrase, and it is also one of the fastest to revert.
If nothing on your profile changed but competitors moved up
We compare their review count, recency, and website strength against yours for the same search, since that points to a prominence gap that opened over time rather than a sudden break on your side.
If the drop happened for one search phrase but not others
We check whether that phrase matches a service listed on the profile at all, since relevance is matched phrase by phrase and a service dropped from the listed services list can quietly stop matching that specific search.
How the engagement runs
01
Check eligibility and history
We confirm the profile is verified and live, and review the edit history around the drop date for a category, name, or hours change that could explain it.
02
Compare against competitors
We look at who is currently ranking for the same searches and compare their reviews, categories, and website strength against yours to find the real gap.
03
Fix and rebuild
We revert or correct whatever changed, and if the gap is prominence, put a steady review request and local content plan back in motion.
Map pack ranking drop FAQ
The most common causes are a category or profile edit that changed relevance without anyone noticing, a suspension or verification issue that made the profile briefly ineligible, or a competitor gaining reviews and links while your profile's prominence stayed flat.
Yes, Google states that local results rank on relevance, distance, and prominence for every search, with eligibility as the gate before any of those apply. What changes from search to search is which factor is doing the most work, not the list itself.
Yes. Google's own guidance says your position in web search results is a factor in local ranking, so a website issue, such as a redesign that lost rankings or a period of downtime, can weaken prominence even when the profile looks untouched.
It can help over time if prominence is the real gap, but reviews build a ranking signal gradually rather than instantly, and a burst of reviews in a short window can itself look suspicious to the platform's own filters. A steady flow works better than a rushed one.
The map pack changes based on the searcher's exact location, so checking from your own office can show a different result than a customer sees across town. Test from a few real locations across your service area, or use a rank tracking tool that lets you set the search point, before concluding you dropped out.
