Implementations / Mailchimp to Customer Match

Turn Mailchimp signups into Google Ads Customer Match audiences.

A Mailchimp list is a real signal of who already wants to hear from you. Customer Match lets Google Ads target and exclude those exact people. Mailchimp does not build that bridge natively, so we are upfront about the two paths that actually do.

The workflow

What actually moves a Mailchimp list into Customer Match.

The field map

We pick which Mailchimp audience or tag represents the group worth targeting or excluding, for example past customers versus a general newsletter list, since Customer Match works best applied to a specific, deliberate segment rather than your whole list at once.

The identity match

Google Ads Customer Match requires an email address hashed with SHA256 before it ever leaves your systems. Neither Zapier nor a manual export does that hashing for you by default, so this is a step we build in rather than assume happens automatically.

Where the data enters

Mailchimp's own Google integration is worth naming here only to rule it out: it pulls Google Lead Form Ads leads into Mailchimp, which is the opposite direction from what Customer Match needs. The real paths are a Zapier connection moving new or tagged Mailchimp contacts into a Google Ads customer list, a paid third party sync service built for this exact pairing, or a scheduled hashed-email export uploaded by hand through the Google Ads interface.

How failures surface

Google Ads shows an audience's match rate once a list uploads, and a rate far below what you would expect usually means the hashing format was wrong or the list included addresses Google could not resolve, which we check before assuming Zapier or the export itself failed.

Validation steps that come before trust.

Access we need first

Admin access to your Mailchimp account to identify the right audience or tag, plus admin rights in Google Ads to create the customer list and confirm it clears Customer Match eligibility requirements.

What gets delivered

A working Zapier connection or a scheduled export process moving a defined Mailchimp segment into a Google Ads customer list with correctly hashed emails, plus a written note on which path we used and why.

The acceptance test

We push one real batch of test contacts through the chosen path and confirm the resulting Google Ads audience shows a sensible match rate, not just that the upload itself completed without an error.

What is out of scope

We do not write your email marketing content or manage your Mailchimp campaigns. We build the pipe moving a segment you choose into a Customer Match audience, nothing about what you send that list afterward.

How we build it.

01

Audit

We check your Mailchimp audience structure, confirm which segment is worth targeting or excluding, and verify your Google Ads account meets Customer Match's eligibility requirements.

02

Build

We set up the Zapier connection or the scheduled export process, including the SHA256 hashing step, and create the matching customer list inside Google Ads.

03

Verify

A real batch of test contacts moves through the path, and we confirm the resulting audience's match rate looks reasonable before handing over the written reference and calling the build finished.
