Physician-led care that works alongside your own doctor.

Sorrel Integrative medicine

About Sorrel

A family-medicine clinic that slowed down

Sorrel opened in 2017 on Chattanooga's North Shore with one idea: some health problems need more than 15 minutes, and patients deserve a plan they can understand.

Our story

"Your labs are fine" wasn't an answer

Dr. Maya Okafor spent twelve years as a family doctor. She liked the work, but one kind of visit kept bothering her: the patient who was clearly unwell, whose labs came back in range, and who left with nothing but "let's keep an eye on it."

She trained in functional medicine to learn a slower way of working through those cases, and opened Sorrel with a simple rule: rule out the serious things first, then take the time to dig in. Dr. Daniel Reyes joined from hospital medicine, and the team grew to include a nurse practitioner, a registered dietitian and a health coach.

We are still a primary-care-minded clinic at heart. That's why we send our notes to your own doctor, why we refer out when something needs a specialist, and why we won't sell you a test or a supplement that won't change the plan.

What we hold to

Four promises, in writing

  1. 01

    Alongside your doctor, not instead

Keep your primary care doctor and your specialists. We send notes after key visits (with your OK) and never ask you to stop a medicine someone else prescribed.

  2. 02

Labs are information, not a verdict

We order tests that will change your plan, read every result with your symptoms and history, and explain it in a visit, not a portal message.

  3. 03

    Prices on the page

Membership, visit and lab prices are printed on our pricing page. We are out of network with insurance, and we say so before you pay anything.

  4. 04

    Evidence over trends

We read the research, we change our minds when it changes, and we say 'we don't know' when that's the truth. Popular isn't the same as proven.

Plain definitions

What the words mean here

"Functional," "integrative," "holistic" and "naturopathic" get used as if they were the same thing. Here's how we use them.

Functional medicine
Spending more time on why symptoms happen: your history, lifestyle, labs and how body systems affect each other. Practiced here by licensed MDs, DOs and NPs.
Integrative medicine
Standard medical care plus evidence-informed nutrition, coaching and mind-body skills, used alongside your other doctors, never instead of them.
What we are not
Not a naturopathic office, not a supplement store, not an urgent care and not a replacement for your primary care doctor.

A kitchen as well as an exam room

Our clinic has a small teaching kitchen. Hannah runs a monthly group cooking class for members, and once a quarter we host a free evening talk on reading your own lab results. Partners and family are welcome at both.

  • Monthly cooking class, first Thursday, 6 p.m.
  • Quarterly "Read your own labs" talk, free and open to all
  • Step-free entrance, accessible restroom, free parking behind the building
