Gut health

Gut symptoms are common, and they are rarely one thing. We start with a careful history and the standard workup, then add specialty testing only when the result would change what we do next.

Who it's for

Does this sound familiar?

  • Bloating or belly pain most days
  • Constipation, loose stools, or a mix of both
  • Reflux that keeps coming back
  • Symptoms that started after antibiotics, an illness or a hard stretch of life
  • Foods you suspect but can't pin down

If something feels urgent or is getting worse quickly, call your primary care doctor today or 911 in an emergency.

How we approach it

Four steps, in this order

  1. 01

Rule out the important things first

Celiac screen, blood count, iron and inflammation markers. If anything points to a problem that needs a scope or a specialist, we refer you before anything else.

  2. 02

    Map the pattern

A two-week food and symptom log, reviewed with our dietitian. Patterns show up on paper that are hard to see day to day.

  3. 03

Change one thing at a time

A structured plan, sometimes a short elimination diet with a planned way back. You learn what matters for you, and you don't end up eating fewer foods forever.

  4. 04

    Test when it helps

A stool analysis or breath test only when the answer would change the plan. We explain what the test can and cannot show before you pay for it.

A note on the evidence

Stool tests can show inflammation and some infections well. Their microbiome scores are still early science, so we use them as one clue, never the whole answer.

Tests we may order

Only when they change the plan

Working with your other doctors

If you already see a gastroenterologist, we work inside their plan and send our notes. If you need a scope, we refer you to one and pick the plan back up afterward.

What we won't do

We don't do scopes, and we don't call every gut symptom a 'leaky gut'. If a test result won't change what we do, we leave it off the order.

When we refer you elsewhere

Some things need a specialist or urgent care first. If any of these apply, we send you to the right place before going further.

  • Blood in your stool, or black, tarry stools
  • Weight loss you can't explain
  • Trouble swallowing, or food that gets stuck
  • Symptoms that wake you up at night
  • A family history of colon cancer, or you are due for a colonoscopy

Questions

About gut health

All questions
Will I have to give up a long list of foods?

No. If an elimination diet makes sense, it is short (usually three to six weeks), planned with the dietitian, and followed by a careful reintroduction so you get as many foods back as possible.

Do I need a stool test?

Often not. Many people get clear answers from history, a food and symptom log, and standard blood work. We suggest a stool test only when it would change the plan.
