The basics

What is functional medicine?

A way of practicing medicine that spends more time on the 'why' behind symptoms: your history, lifestyle, labs and how body systems affect each other. Our clinicians are licensed MDs, DOs and nurse practitioners, and we use standard medical care alongside nutrition, sleep and stress work.

What does 'integrative' mean here?

We combine conventional medicine with evidence-informed approaches like nutrition therapy, health coaching and mind-body skills. And we work with your other doctors, not instead of them.

Is this the same as seeing a naturopath?

No. Naturopathic doctors have a different license and training. Our clinicians are medical doctors (MD), osteopathic doctors (DO) and nurse practitioners (NP) who can examine you, order tests, diagnose and prescribe medicine.

Do I need to leave my primary care doctor?

No, and we'd rather you didn't. Keep your primary care doctor for sick visits, screenings and urgent problems. We focus on the longer questions and send notes after key visits, with your permission.

Can you cure my condition?

We can't promise that, and we'd be careful with anyone who does. What we promise is time, a careful workup, a written plan and honest follow-up. Many people feel better with that approach. Some don't, and if that's you, we'll say so and help you find the next step.

Do you see children?

We see adults 18 and older. For children, we're happy to suggest pediatric practices in the area.

Cost and insurance

How much does it cost?

The discovery call is free. Core membership is $175 a month and Complete is $265 a month for the first six months. After that, continuing care is $95 a month if you want it. Labs are extra and priced before we order them.

Do you take insurance?

We are out of network with all insurance plans. We give you a superbill for visits that you can send to your insurer. Many PPO plans pay back part of it, HMO plans usually don't, and we can't promise what yours will do. Standard labs can often be billed to insurance.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes, for visits and labs. Ask your plan administrator whether the monthly membership fee counts as an eligible expense.

I have Medicare. Can I join?

Please talk to us first. Medicare has special rules for out-of-network clinicians, and we'll explain your options on the discovery call.

Can I cancel?

The first six months is a commitment because that's how long a real plan takes. If you move out of state or have a medical reason, we end it early with no fee. After six months, cancel any time with 30 days' notice.

Labs, medicines and supplements

My labs were normal. Why would you find anything different?

Sometimes we won't, and that's useful to know too. Often we add tests no one ran, read normal results alongside your symptoms, and look at sleep, food, stress and medicines. 'Normal' rules out a lot. It doesn't always explain how you feel.

Will you order lots of tests?

No. Every test has a written reason, and if it won't change the plan we leave it off. We also list the tests we usually skip, and why, on the membership page.

Do you prescribe medication?

Yes, when it's the right tool. Our MDs, DO and NP can prescribe, and medicine is often part of a good plan. We also review what you already take and stop what isn't needed, together with whoever prescribed it.

Do you sell supplements?

Supplements are never the treatment plan. When one has good evidence for your situation (vitamin D when you're low, for example), we name the dose and a third-party tested brand you can buy anywhere. Our small shelf is there for convenience, priced the same as online.

Visits and membership

Are visits in person or by video?

Both. We recommend the first visit in person in Chattanooga. Follow-ups can be by video if you live in Tennessee or Georgia, where our clinicians are licensed.

How soon can I be seen?

The discovery call is usually within a week. First visits are usually two to three weeks after that.

What if I need care urgently?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. We are not an urgent care clinic. For same-day sick visits, your primary care doctor or an urgent care is the right place.

What happens after six months?

We decide together. Some people continue, some step down to continuing care at $95 a month, and many graduate back to their primary care doctor with a clear written plan. All three are good outcomes.
