Recovery: Performance Max
Performance Max is spending fast and you cannot see where it is going.
Performance Max hides the individual search terms behind automation. We open the account, read the signals Google does show, and find the setting that is burning budget before we touch a single bid.
- Account read access before any changes
- Findings in writing before we act
- Scoped price before we start
Evidence, then action
How we find the leak
The evidence we pull first
We start with the Insights tab, the search category breakdown, and the asset group performance report. Performance Max will not hand over a full search term list, so we read the categories, the audience signals you gave it, and the listing groups if the campaign runs off your Merchant Center feed.
The triage order
First we check whether Final URL expansion is on, because that setting lets Google send clicks to any page on your domain, not only the one built for the offer. Next we check account level negative keywords, brand exclusions, and whether one weak asset group is absorbing most of the budget.
What usually fixes it
Turning off Final URL expansion, adding negatives at the account level, tightening audience signals, and splitting a bloated campaign into asset groups with one clear theme each clears most of the leak. If the feed is the real source, the fix sits in Merchant Center, not the campaign settings.
What we cannot promise
Performance Max is a Google managed bidding system, and we cannot force it to favor a page it has decided against or promise a specific cost per lead. What we can promise is a clear audit, the exact changes we make, and an honest read on whether the format fits your business.
The decision tree we run
If spend jumped after a change
we check the change history first. A budget edit, a new asset group, or a removed exclusion two weeks ago is often the real trigger, not the algorithm suddenly behaving differently.
If the search categories look unrelated to your offer
we check Final URL expansion and the account level negative list, since Performance Max only respects negatives added there, not inside one campaign.
If one asset group is spending most of the budget
we check its ad strength and creative count, because Google's bidding tends to favor the asset group with the strongest signals and can starve the others even when they matter more to you.
If the campaign runs off your product feed
we check Merchant Center for disapproved items and feed rules, since a shrinking approved catalog can push spend toward whichever products are still eligible, whether or not they are your best margin items.
How the engagement runs
01
Audit call and read access
We ask for view only access to Google Ads, GA4, and Merchant Center if Shopping is involved. Nothing changes in your account before this call.
02
Written findings before any changes
You get a plain summary of what we found and the exact settings we plan to change, so nothing moves without your sign off.
03
Changes, then a watch window
We make the agreed changes and check the account daily for two weeks, since Performance Max needs time to relearn after a settings change.
Performance Max spend questions
Performance Max pools your budget across several asset groups and placements at once and optimizes toward whatever signal you gave it, not necessarily your best leads. A loose audience signal, a wide product feed, or Final URL expansion left on can send spend toward traffic that never had a real chance of converting. We read the categories and asset group data Google does provide to find which one it is.
Yes. Pausing stops the spend right away and keeps the history readable. The tradeoff is that Smart Bidding tends to reset part of its learning after a long pause, so we usually recommend a short pause for the audit rather than an open ended one.
It can reduce volume for a short stretch, since the setting was sending traffic to more pages than the one built for the offer. Most accounts settle into a more predictable spend pattern within one to two weeks once it is off, though we cannot promise a specific number, since every catalog and offer is different.
Either works. Some clients want us inside Google Ads making the changes directly, and others want a written list so their own team makes the edit. We scope which one you want before we start.
If you want us managing the account going forward, this rolls into our standard Google Ads management fee: 10% of the budget you set, a $600 a month minimum, and no markup on your spend. A one time audit without ongoing management is scoped in a free proposal, sent within one business day.
