GTM Container Audit
GTM container audit, clean up what is actually firing.
We go through every tag, trigger, and variable in your Google Tag Manager container and tell you plainly what works, what is broken, and what should never have been published.
- No cost to scope this, quoted within a business day
- A written report, not just a verbal opinion
- Protected by our 30 day guarantee
What we set up
How we go through your container.
Full tag inventory
We list every tag in the container, what it is supposed to do, and whether it is actually firing using Tag Assistant preview mode.
Duplicate and conflict check
We find tags doing the same job twice, like two copies of a Google Ads tag from different agencies over the years, and flag which one to remove.
Trigger scope review
We check which tags fire on all pages versus only where they are needed, since an overly broad trigger can slow the page or fire in the wrong context.
Consent and privacy check
We review whether tags respect your site's consent settings, since a tag firing before consent is granted can be a real privacy problem, not just a data quality one.
What this needs, what you receive, and how the findings hold up.
Access we need
Read access to the GTM container at minimum, though edit access lets us fix small issues during the same engagement instead of just listing them.
What is delivered
A written audit listing every tag, its status, and a plain recommendation, keep, fix, or remove, ranked by how much it matters.
The acceptance test
You can hand the report to anyone on your team and they should be able to tell, without asking us, which issues to fix first.
Out of scope
We do not rebuild your entire container as part of the audit itself. Fixing the flagged issues is a follow up project we can scope once you see the report.
How the audit runs.
01
Pull the container
We get read access and export a full list of every tag, trigger, and variable currently published.
02
Test in preview mode
We load your key pages in GTM preview mode and record what actually fires, compared to what is supposed to fire.
03
Write the report
We turn the findings into a plain written report with a clear priority order, not a raw data dump.
GTM container audits, answered.
We load the site in Google Tag Manager's built in preview mode, which shows exactly which tags fired on which page and why any tag did not fire, rather than guessing from the outside.
Duplicate tags from different agencies or platforms over the years, usually two or three versions of the same Google Ads or GA4 tag firing at once, which quietly inflates numbers.
Removing a genuinely duplicate tag should not break anything, since the working copy stays in place. We flag anything uncertain separately rather than recommend removing it outright.
It helps. Seeing the actual reporting lets us confirm whether a tag that looks fine in preview mode is also sending clean data, but a container only audit is possible without it.
Most audits take a few business days once we have access, since we need to check every major page type, not just the homepage, in preview mode.
