Semrush vs Ahrefs for local SEO: which research tool fits a service business

In short

Both are priced for agencies and in-house teams, not for one shop. Ahrefs starts at $129 a month for 5 projects and 750 tracked keywords, with a $29 Starter tier for basic research. Semrush's entry tier is $117.33 a month on annual billing with 5 websites and 500 tracked keywords. Neither page lists a separate local plan; local work happens inside the standard tiers.

Key facts

  • Ahrefs's pricing page (ahrefs.com/pricing, accessed 2026-09-26) lists Lite at $129 a month with 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits and 1 user; Standard at $249 with 20 projects and 2,000 tracked keywords; Advanced at $449 with 50 projects and 5,000 tracked keywords; and Enterprise at $1,499 a month on an annual commitment.
  • Ahrefs also lists a Starter tier at $29 a month for entry-level competitor research and a free tier with limited features, and states annual billing saves up to 17 percent; extra users are $60 a month each on Standard and $80 a month each on Advanced.
  • Semrush's pricing page (semrush.com/pricing, accessed 2026-09-26) shows four tiers on annual billing: SEO at $117.33 a month with 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily, Starter at $165.17, Pro Plus at $248.17 with 15 websites and 1,500 keywords, and Advanced at $455.67 with 40 websites and 5,000 keywords, plus a free tier and custom enterprise plans.
  • Semrush's Starter, Pro Plus and Advanced tiers add daily tracking of AI visibility prompts, listed as 50, 100 and 200 prompts a day, and the page states annual plans save up to 17 percent.
  • Neither pricing page lists a separate local SEO plan or a local add-on price; both tools do local research (rank tracking by location, competitor listings, keyword research by city) inside their standard tiers.

The job: knowing what people in your city search for and where you rank

A service business wants three things from a research tool: the phrases customers in its area actually type, the pages competitors rank with, and a monthly read on its own positions by city. Both Semrush and Ahrefs do all three, and both were built for people who do this all day. The question for a single business is whether a tool priced for agencies is worth it, or whether a cheaper tier or a local-only tool is enough.

This comparison uses only what the two pricing pages published on September 26, 2026. Feature details beyond those pages are described in general terms.

Ahrefs: five tiers, priced by projects and tracked keywords

Ahrefs's page lists Lite at $129 a month with 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits, 6 months of history and one user. Standard is $249 with 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 500,000 crawl credits and two years of history, and lets you add five more users at $60 a month each. Advanced is $449 with 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, 1.5 million crawl credits and five years of history, with ten extra users at $80 each. Enterprise is $1,499 a month, requires an annual commitment and includes uncapped API access and unlimited history.

Below all of that sits a Starter tier at $29 a month, described as an entry-level competitor research tool, and a free tier with limited features. Annual billing saves up to 17 percent. The page notes rank tracking is included on paid tiers without listing separate rank tracking limits beyond the tracked keyword counts.

Semrush: four tiers, priced by websites, keywords and AI prompts

Semrush's page lists SEO at $117.33 a month on annual billing with 5 websites to monitor and 500 keywords tracked daily. Starter is $165.17 with the same 5 websites and 500 keywords plus 50 AI visibility prompts tracked daily and MCP access. Pro Plus is $248.17 with 15 websites, 1,500 keywords and 100 prompts. Advanced is $455.67 with 40 websites, 5,000 keywords, 200 prompts and API data integration. A free tier exists with limited capability, and enterprise plans are custom. Annual plans save up to 17 percent.

The AI prompt tracking is the visible difference from Ahrefs on the pricing pages: Semrush's mid and upper tiers include a daily count of prompts monitored for AI visibility, which matters to a business that wants to know whether assistants mention it when someone asks for a plumber in its city.

What each does for local work, and what neither page promises

Local rank tracking: both track keywords by location, and the plan limits above are the real constraint. A single-location business tracking 40 phrases across one city fits the smallest tier of either. A multi-location business tracking 40 phrases in 20 cities needs 800 tracked keywords, which pushes it to Ahrefs Standard or Semrush Pro Plus.

Keyword research by city: both estimate search volumes for phrases with a city name; treat the numbers as estimates and check them against your own Search Console data. Competitor research: both show which pages a competitor ranks with, which is the fastest way to plan service and location pages. Listings and reviews: neither pricing page lists a local listings or review product in the standard tiers, so a business that needs citation building or review management pairs either tool with a local tool like BrightLocal or Whitespark.

Data ownership and exports: both export reports and keyword lists; the research is yours to keep. Neither page describes any lock-in beyond the annual commitment on Ahrefs Enterprise.

Choose Ahrefs when, choose Semrush when, and when neither

Choose Ahrefs when link and competitor page research is the main job and you want a lower entry price; the $29 Starter tier covers basic competitor research, and Lite at $129 covers a single business with 750 tracked keywords. Choose Semrush when you want AI visibility prompt tracking in the same tool, or when your team already lives in its reports; its entry tier is a little cheaper on annual billing but its AI tracking starts at the $165.17 Starter tier.

Choose neither when you have one location and no in-house marketer. Google Search Console is free and shows your real queries and positions, and a local rank tracker costs a fraction of either tool. At SearchPod we run research tools inside SEO work for clients rather than asking a client to buy a subscription; SEO pages are priced at $50 CAD per page from ten pages a month, and the research comes with the work.
