What we asked and how the study works
On 2026-09-26 we sent five education prompts, one run each, to gpt-5.1 with its web search tool on, and recorded every URL the model attached to its answer. We sorted each cited host by type with our own rules: a school's or business's own site, a directory or review site, a news, reference or government site, Reddit, or social. The categories are our own; the cited hosts are exactly what the model returned.
The prompts covered different education purchases: best private tutoring service in Toronto for high school math, daycare recommendations in Vancouver, driving school in Calgary, whether a coding bootcamp in Chicago is worth it, and best preschool in Dallas.
What each prompt cited
Toronto math tutoring: five citations, to themathguru.ca, tutoringexpert.ca, winnymath.com and trustanalytica.org. The answer named those services briefly and spent most of its length on how to choose: match the tutor to the exact course, check the tutor's background, take a trial lesson and agree a plan.
Vancouver daycare: five citations, to bcdaycares.ca, maplecub.ca and wstcoast.org. The answer pointed parents to the provincial child care map and licensed search tools and to the resource centre, and named few centres. Calgary driving school: nine citations, to drivami.com, drivingzonecalgary.ca, roadprep.ca, sierracalgarydrivingschool.com and open.alberta.ca, naming schools and explaining the class 5 graduated licence path.
Chicago coding bootcamp: no citations. The answer was a decision guide covering alumni outcomes, apprenticeships and internships, community college programs, career services and curriculum relevance. Dallas preschool: seven citations, all to thedaycarebook.com and winnie.com, two child care directories, with the answer naming a few standouts and referring to best-of guides for the rest.
The pattern: directories and government for child care, business sites for skills
For child care, where licensing and availability are the parent's concern, the model went to child care directories, a provincial map and a resource centre, and named few centres. For skills, tutoring and driving, it read the businesses' own sites and named them, with the provincial licensing page cited alongside for driving. For the bootcamp question, which was really a should-I question, it cited nothing and reasoned instead.
By our sorting, 24 of 26 citations were school or business sites and two were directories, but that undercounts: the two Dallas hosts and the three Vancouver hosts are directories and resource sites by any sensible reading, so about 12 of 26 citations were third-party child care listings and government pages.
What a school, centre or tutor can do with this
A daycare or preschool should expect to be found through the directories and government maps the model cited, so its listing there, with licence status, ages and openings current, is what matters; the centre's own site is the second click. A tutoring company or driving school can be cited directly, so a site that names the exact courses or licence classes covered, the tutors' or instructors' backgrounds, prices and the trial or first-lesson policy is the page the model reads and quotes.
The model's own advice in every answer was procedural: check licensing, match the course, take a trial, verify outcomes. Pages that answer those questions plainly give it something to cite. What this cannot tell you
Five prompts, each run once, through one model on one day. Another day, model or wording would produce different citations, and the host sorting is ours and undercounted directories in this category. The schools, centres and tutors the model named are recorded only as what it said; nothing on this page verifies or endorses any of them.

For tutoring and driving schools, yes: three tutoring companies and four driving schools were cited and named. For daycare and preschool it cited child care directories, a provincial map and a resource centre and named few centres.
Why the model chose as it did is not something the output reveals. The prompt asked whether a bootcamp is worth it rather than which one, and the answer was a decision guide with no sources attached.

Centres: keep the directory and government listings current with licence status, ages and openings. Tutors and driving schools: publish pages that name the exact courses or licence classes, instructor backgrounds, prices and trial policy.
