Sample figures for a fictional credit union, as of October 2026. APY means annual percentage yield. Rates are variable and can change after the account is opened. Fees could reduce earnings.
Why does a credit union need a $5 share?
A credit union is a cooperative. Buying one share is how you become a part-owner. The $5 isn't a fee. It stays yours, and it comes back to you if you ever leave.
What does my vote decide?
Members elect the volunteer board of directors at the annual meeting each April. Members also vote on the grant shortlist and, this year, on where branch number six goes.
Should I save here or in High-Yield Savings?
High-Yield Savings pays more (3.10% APY against 0.75% in these sample rates). Most members keep the $5 share here and do their real saving in High-Yield.
