Frequently asked questions

Straight answers, no asterisks

The questions we hear most at the counter, answered the way we'd answer them there. Can't find yours? Call any branch, or send a message.

Membership

Who can join Greater Trust?

Anyone who lives, works, worships, or studies in Suffolk, Norfolk, or Middlesex County. Family and household members of current members can join too, and so can employees of our 120+ partner organizations. Anyone else in Massachusetts can join through a one-time $10 Neighbors Fund donation.

What does the $5 share do?

It makes you a part-owner. It sits in your Share Savings account, gives you one vote at the annual meeting, and comes back to you if you ever close your membership.

Do you check my credit to join?

No. Membership doesn't involve a credit check. Loans and credit cards do, and each application is reviewed on its own.

Can I stay a member if I move away?

Yes. Once you're a member, you can stay one wherever you live. The app, mobile deposit, and shared branching at partner credit unions keep everything working.

Accounts and rates

Are the rates on this website real?

No. Greater Trust CU is a fictional credit union and this is a sample website. Every rate, APY, APR, and fee shown is a sample figure for demonstration, not an offer.

What's the difference between APY and APR?

APY is what your savings earn in a year, including compounding. APR is what a loan costs you in a year, including certain fees. Higher APY is better for savings. Lower APR is better for loans.

Do you charge overdraft or NSF fees?

We don't charge NSF fees on declined transactions. If you link savings, we move money over to cover a shortfall for free, once a day.

Is my money insured?

At a real federally insured credit union, deposits are insured by the NCUA up to $250,000 per member, per ownership category, the same level of protection banks get from the FDIC. Greater Trust is fictional, so nothing on this demo is a real deposit.

Loans and cards

How long does a loan decision take?

Auto and personal loans usually get a decision within one business day. Mortgages and home equity lines take longer because the home needs a valuation.

Can you promise I'll be approved?

No, and be wary of any lender that does. Every application is reviewed on its own. If the answer is no, we explain why and what would change it.

Can I pay off a loan early?

Yes. None of our consumer loans have a prepayment penalty. You only pay interest for the time you had the money.

Which credit card should I get?

If you pay in full every month, the Community Cash Card's cash back wins. If you sometimes carry a balance, the TrustLine Card's lower rate saves you more.

Digital banking and security

Will Greater Trust ever call me for a code?

Never. Nobody from Greater Trust will ask for a one-time code, password, or PIN. If someone does, hang up and call the number on the back of your card.

How do I lock a lost card?

Open the app, tap the card, and tap Lock. It takes effect right away. If you find it, unlock it the same way.

How fast are mobile deposits?

Checks under $500 are available right away. The rest is available the next business day.

Branches

Which branches are open on Saturday?

Roslindale, Quincy, Somerville, and Dorchester. Waltham is closed on Saturdays. See branch hours for times.

Can I bank at other credit unions?

Yes. Through shared branching you can make deposits and withdrawals at thousands of partner credit unions, and use 30,000+ co-op ATMs without a surcharge.

Ready when you are

Membership starts with a $5 share and takes about ten minutes. Not sure which accounts? The quiz takes two.
