Culture

What working here is like

Member-first, not sales-first
We don’t have product quotas. Branch staff aren’t paid commissions for opening accounts. Performance metrics are member NPS, problem-resolution rate, retention.
Promote from within
82% of management hired from within. Senior leadership team has avg tenure of 18 years. Most VPs started as tellers or branch reps.
No layoff history
71 years, zero layoffs. We’ve weathered 2008, 2020, the regional banking turbulence of 2023 — without job cuts. The cooperative model gives us strategic patience.
Branch culture
Each branch is a small, tight-knit team of 6–14 people. Branch managers have real authority. Days are spent solving real problems for real members from your community.
Headquarters culture
Hybrid by default (3 days in office, 2 remote for most roles). Engineering + back-office can be fully remote within NC/SC/TN. HQ is in Charlotte.
Growth paths
Teller → Member services → Lending → Branch management is the most common path. Engineering, risk, finance, marketing, compliance also hire externally + grow internally.

What employees say

I started as a teller in 2009. Now I run our SBA lending program. The credit union paid for my MBA along the way. There’s no version of this career path at the bank I left.

I came over from a big bank. The biggest adjustment was: I’m not selling. I’m solving. Members come in with a problem; I help; I get measured on whether they’re happier. That’s the whole job.

Fully remote engineering, real impact, lower stress than the fintech I came from. We don’t ship on Fridays. We don’t do crunch. The product still gets better every quarter.

What candidates ask

  • Not for entry-level branch roles — we train extensively. We hire for character + customer-orientation. For senior or specialized roles (lending, compliance, engineering), specific experience matters more.
