What we asked and how the study works
On 2026-09-26 we sent five automotive prompts, one run each, to gpt-5.1 with its web search tool on, and recorded every URL the model attached to its answer. We sorted each cited host by type with our own rules: a shop's or dealer's own site, a directory or review site, a news or reference site, Reddit, or social. We chose the buckets; the model chose the hosts.
The prompts covered five different automotive purchases: best auto repair shop in Toronto for a Honda, window tinting shop in Vancouver, ceramic coating and detailing in Calgary, collision repair shop recommendations in Chicago, and used car dealership with good reviews in Dallas.
What each prompt cited
Toronto Honda repair: eight citations, to midtownhonda.com and torontohonda.com, two dealership sites, dealerrater.ca, thecommonwell.ca and reddit.com. The answer named an independent shop and a dealer service department, told the reader to call and ask three quick questions, and separated collision work from mechanical repair.
Vancouver window tinting: six citations, all to shop sites, and the answer named those shops with a note about Vancouver proper versus the suburbs. Calgary ceramic coating and detailing: nine citations, to calgarydetailing.com, detailingcarspa.com, shimmerandshinestudio.com, spscalgary.com, taylord.ca, tlcautodetail.ca, xtremedetailingyyc.ca, yycdetail.ca and localdetailers.ca, a directory, with the answer naming two shops.
Chicago collision repair: seven citations, to carwise.com, reviews.birdeye.com, pressadvantage.com and reddit.com. The answer grouped shops by area, named a citywide chain with multiple locations and one independent shop, and cited no body shop's own site. Dallas used car dealership: ten citations, to dealerrater.com, reviews.birdeye.com, yably.com, reddit.com and en.wikipedia.org, with the answer naming several dealers and telling the reader to check Google Maps for each.
The pattern: specialty shops get read, trust categories get reviewed
For tinting and detailing, specialty work where shops publish detailed service pages, the model read shop sites and named the shops. For collision repair and used cars, categories where trust is the question, it went to DealerRater, Carwise, review platforms, ratings sites and Reddit, and named businesses from those pages while telling the reader to verify them. The Honda repair prompt sat in between: dealer sites plus DealerRater plus Reddit.
By our sorting, 24 of 40 citations were own sites, nine were directories or review sites, six were Reddit and one was Wikipedia. The 24 own-site citations came almost entirely from the two specialty prompts.
What an auto shop or dealer can do with this
A tint, wrap, detailing or specialty shop is in the best position: the model read shop pages and named the shops, so a site that states services, films or coatings used, warranty, location and vehicle types plainly is what gets cited. A body shop or used car dealer is judged from DealerRater, Carwise, review platforms and Reddit, so the profiles on those sites and the pattern of recent reviews are what the model reads, and the shop's own site plays a supporting role at best.
For every category, the model's own advice was to call and ask questions, check reviews and use Google Maps, so a Google Business Profile with current hours and reviews that mention the specific job is part of the answer. SearchPod builds those pages for automotive clients, keeps the review and dealer platform profiles consistent, and tracks which prompts cite the shop with a fixed prompt panel.
What this cannot tell you
This is one model on one date, with each of five prompts asked a single time. Change the day, the model or the wording and the citations would change too, and the sorting is our own. The shops and dealers the model named are recorded only as what it said; nothing on this page verifies or endorses any of them.
Related questions
For tinting and detailing, almost entirely: every citation for the Vancouver tint prompt was a shop site and all but one for Calgary detailing. For collision repair and used cars it cited DealerRater, Carwise, review platforms, a ratings site and Reddit instead, and no body shop site at all.
In three of five answers, six citations in all, for Honda repair in Toronto, collision repair in Chicago and used car dealers in Dallas.
Only the model's output is visible, never its reasoning. In the output, the categories where trust is the buyer's worry were answered from review and rating platforms, with advice to verify each name, while specialty shops were named from their own pages.
By our own pattern rules, sorting each host as a shop's own site, a directory or review site, a news or reference site, Reddit or social. Argue with our rules if you like; the hosts came straight from the model.
Specialty shops: state services, materials, warranty and location plainly on the site. Body shops and dealers: keep DealerRater, Carwise and review platform profiles current and collect recent reviews that mention the job. SearchPod re-runs a fixed panel of prompts for clients and reports the change.
